One of the challenges as a photographer is to develop an identity, a style, that can be recognised by those familiar with your work. For me, I have always been told that my work has a melancholy, still, look that can often make even recent images appear as if they were taken many years ago. To try and explain this, both to you and myself, I have noted below a number of key motivators that have always stimulated me with my photography.
For me, I want to both look and see simultaneously, in the moment of taking the photograph, holding the attention of the viewer, however briefly, encouraging them to look at the details, associations, and juxtapositions within each narrative.
I want to inspire myself by listening to those viewing my photographs. Each photograph merely provides an opportunity to engage openly with others; it is that open engagement with others that has the potential to change the world. Be bold!
Photographing people in their environments should not be confined exclusively to the role of observer. A key motivation for me is to combine and sustain a personal outlet for my creativity with an engagement, where possible, with the subjects of my image. The opportunity to capture what my eye sees, influenced by these aspects of engagement and communication, is both inspiring and humbling.
